LISA L. - 4 STARS

I usually read more light-hearted books like retold fairytales. But I also enjoy other genres. This book kind of reminds me of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games books as far as dark subject matter goes. Also, both Katniss and Rayah are being raised in dystopian societies whose leaders want to maintain the status quo. In The Descendants, the leaders seem to think their way of life is the best, and they send collectors to “rescue” children from The Wilds. Having classes of people separated by the color of light magic they produce is unique. If only Rayah had been able to use the right color, she would have never been sent to be a slave as a child. Rayah’s world is a harsh one, where she is punished, mocked and tortured at every opportunity, yet she tries her best to be strong. I was so happy when she was able to “escape” to The Wilds, but even there she faces all kinds of dangers. She believes that she is a powerless null, but with the help of others, she might discover that she is more powerful than she knows. I also love how this book ends. Rayah discovers something important that makes the reader want to immediately start the next book!
