ANN P. - 5 STARS

I could not put this book down! Destiny Hawkins showcases her talent for writing, imagination, colorful imagery, and storylines in book #1 of The Descendants! It has been a while since I have been sucked into a full day read-a-thon! Papers to grade, they can wait! Shopping and meal prep, take out it is! Too much TV time for the kids, no big deal because Mama is reading!

The story introduces us to a society based on birth, ability, and hierarchy. Rayah is the main character, ostracized by her academy mates due to a deal her parents made to keep her from a life of slavery. No one gets that kind of break in this society so she is taunted, bullied, harmed, and alienated. The story moves through her last few months to prove her powers to the leadership of the academy. Her self-confidence is lacking at the start, however, the author shows us glimpses of power and growing self-esteem. Her journey introduces us to her only close friendships, catches a glimpse of her parents, and the potential of a future for her.

This book definitely builds characters, introduces us to the evils that will start to appear in future books, and leaves the reader excited for the books to come. I look forward to the journey I started today with Destiny Hawkins and The Descendants series!
